my trip to singkawang

14 December 2010 in Events 2 Comments

Had to go Singkawang ( pontianak, kalimantan ) for a wedding job from one of my student. I had to do her, and my assistant (student of mine) would have to do the mother of the bride and groom.
It was a long long journey to reach her house in Singkawang. Predicted 3 hours drive from pontianak, provided the car runs at 120km/hour from airport going straight to Singkawang..
Whereas for us, since it was a 13.35 flight, and we had to check in at the counter 2 hours priors to flight ( which means about 11.30 ), we didn’t had our lunch, and we reach there about 15.00 accountable for baggage and waiting for about 17 others.. And we supposed to reach Singkawang about dinner time.
Furthermore, my assistant’s hairspray was confiscated by the immigration officers! So all and all, we had to stop by the largest hypermart in the city before we go to Singkawang ( and they said that there, don’t even have some neccesities needed ), so it is THAT crucial to stop by before heading to Singkawang. And since there are some big guys in our car ( the other car was filled with mostly skinny guys ), they can’t wait but to stop by somewhere to grab something before we start our journey. Finally we reached Singkawang, officially the bride’s house at about 11 (almost midnight)… And pratically we don’t have any information about what’s going to happen the next morning, and everybody was confused!!
It was different, I would say the marriage tradition there. Altogether, it was a meaningful one:)
The next morning, we were planning to have some trying out of the traditional food there, and buying some traditional snacks and gifts there to bring back to jakarta for family and friends. HOWEVER, only 5 people woke up ( including me of course ), and worse, the minibus was planned to come at 11 by the groom!! (Goodness me!!!!) And thank GOD, the bride’s uncle was kind enough to bring us around. We tasted one of the best noodle ever! And I love love love their rujak!!! ( Will do some review on this deffinitely ) bout some juhi ( my dad said they were the best, and they ARE! ), lembok durian ( basically it’s dodol durian ), and I love their kripik pisang! ( Banana crackers ).. and we did made it on time back to the villa, where the minibus waited for us!
And for first time ever…EVER in my life, I ever missed a plane!
It was chaotic! Since the wind were very big! Almost storm-like wind blowing all over the place, a lot of trees went down in the middle of the road!( We found 4, and the other car found 8 ) And they had to cut ( practically just the saw and sew the tree off the roots )… And we practically had to wait till they finished their cutting, before we could pass the road! Moreover, with all the floods! Gosh! It is just so hard to NOT miss the flight!
Finally when we got to the airport, we had to change flight ( to a delayed one, and lucky us, the plane was delayed for more than 2 hours, so we could squeeze in ) in order to fly on the same date ( I and some of the photographers had to coz we do have fixed appointments the next day )… Some of the guests were staying over though, and took the next day’s flight! And they got to enjoy Pontianak for a day or so:) lucky them too!
All in all, we all got what we wanted, flew back to jakarta on the same date ( although, it was very late at 10 plus, in comparison to the planned 5 late afternoon )
What an experience! Something you don’t find everyday in your life and deffinitely not mine!
